Coffee Vein Closed -BRC Accepts Their Old Drink Cards

The Coffee Vein closed unexpectedly last night. We don’t know the details, but we do know that their customers need to have a place to get their morning coffee on the way to work or school.

To serve them the Black Rose Caffe will open it’s doors at 8:00 AM on weekday mornings.

The Black Rose Caffe not only has the best coffee and espresso in Tucson, but they also serve great food. They have breakfast items (breakfast is served all day), soup, salad, sandwiches, smoothies- made from real fruit and fruit juice , milkshakes - they very best milkshake you will ever drink - made with Breyer’s vanilla bean ice cream, and pastries.
For a limited time they will honor the drink card from Coffee Vein customers. Just bring in your card and they will give you one of theirs in exchange. This is a 50% credit - if you have a full card they will give you credit for 5 drinks on their card.

The Black Rose Caffe is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday thru Friday and 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday.

A BookCrossing Day

Filed under: Customer Reviews — blackros @ 4:15 pm

A customer posted this in her blog:

Odel is not a bookish sort, although he will read a mystery or thriller when it is the only entertainment available. I usually pursue books on my own, happily.

When we arrived at our current park and met JoAnn and Doug, and JoAnn expressed her interest in BookCrossing, I suggested a “BookCrossing Day” for JoAnn and I. Monday’s windy weather was perfect for what we had in mind - a visit to Bookman’s, Tucson’s highly regarded used book/CD/DVD store, and to Tucson’s only “Official BookCrossing Zone” (OBCZ), the Black Rose Caffe.

JoAnn was the perfect companion for this outing, new to Tucson and full of curiosity, seemingly happy with any agenda. We began at Bookman’s, where we browsed the stacks and lost track of time. I checked out with 9 books, several from my mental list of “books of interest” that had been too expensive to purchase new; JoAnn had a big bag of books in her hands, too.

It was almost noon when we left - lunch time. I had visited the Black Rose Caffe’s website and knew they served sandwiches, salads, coffee drinks and desserts, but had put off visiting on my own because the website seemed a little wierd - mentioning Tarot card readings, a psychic fair, and neo-pagan meetings. Hmmmm. Fun? Interesting? or uncomfortably odd?

Now we had strength in numbers, and the lure of an OBCZ was strong, so off we went.

An OBCZ is a public place (business, library, senior center, etc.) that sets aside a space for BookCrossing-registered books. Anyone is free to take these books home, read them, make a journal entry on BookCrossing, and pass the book on, either at an OBCZ or as a “wild release”. I had never visited an OBCZ, but was curious.

Joann and I found the Black Rose Caffe and agreed that it looked promising from the outside. The inside was even better, totally delightful: roomy, comfortable, relaxing. Lovely colors and pleasant lighting. I took this photo from our table, where I was sitting on a comfortable booth seat surrounded by lush throw pillows.

Lunch was delicious and great fun in the company of Joann. We found the BookCrossing shelf and I left a book there, and studied all the other books - some registered with BC, some not. I also studied the flyers and notices on the bulletin board, and came home with a fascinating brochure about the beliefs of Neopagan Druids - another stereotype shattered! If I was more of a joiner, I’m sure they could sign me up.

If you are coming to (or in) Tucson, both places merit a visit - and several returns.

The Black Rose Caffe is located at 1800 N. Stone Ave., Tucson, AZ.

Fresh Toddy or Yesterday’s Leftovers? - You Decide!

Filed under: Drinks, Coffee Drinks — blackros @ 7:02 pm

Toddy is a cold brewing system developed and patented by Todd Simpson in 1964. In the absence of competition in this brand space, it has become a genericized reference in American English and many people in the United States today refer to any cold brewed coffee as a “Toddy”.

We use toddy to make our iced coffee. It makes the best tasting iced coffee you have ever tasted. Most coffee shops make their iced coffee from their leftover coffee or from hot brewed coffee. Either way it has a bitter acidic taste. We cold brew and filter our toddy, producing a rich coffee taste with no acidity, whatever. It is so mild that some of our customer ask us to heat it and serve it as a hot coffee. One of our customers that was experiencing stomac pains could only drink the toddy coffee. She would purchase a quart of it at a time and use it at home.

The Toddy process requires grinding coffee beans and soaking the grounds in cold water for a prolonged period of time. The grounds must be filtered out of the cold water after they have been steeped. The end result produces a concentrated coffee that is diluted with water and served over ice. Brewing coffee by this method reduces the acidity of the drink by some 67 percent compared to coffee brewed by traditional hot extraction methods.

So you make the choice - iced leftovers from yesterday? Or fresh cold brewed toddy from the Black Rose Caffe. Stop in and exoerience the difference.

Want Wi-Fi with that?

Filed under: About the Black Rose Caffe, In the News, Recent — blackros @ 8:04 pm

Web access moves to more restaurants, bars UA law student Kevin Lanou uses the free Wi-Fi access at the Black Rose Caffe

TOM STAUFFER

Tucson Citizen
Published: 10.03.2007
If you’re Wi-Fi savvy, you’re probably well aware that most coffee houses are Wi-Fi friendly, though the connection will cost you at such places as Starbucks.
What you may not know is that there are also are variety of places scattered around Tucson where you can go on online with your laptop and get something in your stomach a little more substantial than a bagel or a Danish.
Wi-Fi dining is something of a sticky wicket for restaurateurs. They want to make customers happy and provide them with services that will attract them. At the same time, they also run businesses that depend on multiple turns - seating new diners at lunch and dinner as many times as possible. A dining room full of Wi-Fi users who spend hours at their tables could keep potential customers from getting a table, says Jeff Jones, who, after taking over the Silver Mine Subs franchise at 760 N. Tyndall Ave. five years ago, took the initiative to install a Wi-Fi system.
“We make it available all the time for free, and sometimes, people just get a soft drink and then stay for a while because they’re using the Wi-Fi,” he says. “But my feeling is that as long as there is room for other people to come in and eat and find a table, they can stay as long as they want.
“I can see how at some point, it could get to be a problem with some restaurants.”
Another factor that has to be considered is the way online use can alter the dining experience for other customers, notes Erv Schultz, manager of The Gold Room at Westward Look Resort, 245 E. Ina Road.
Westward Look offers free Wi-Fi service to guests of the resort but draws the line at the AAA Four-Diamond rated Gold Room, Schultz says.
“We discourage people from using their cell phones, and I think most people get the cell phone bit, because they’ve been in situations where a cell phone ringing or someone talking loudly was disruptive,” he says. “We feel like having people going online to Web sites, watching videos and listening to music could be pretty disruptive in a fine-dining setting.”
But, the resort’s more casual Lookout Bar & Grille doesn’t discourage Wi-Fi use.
“What we often get at the Lookout is people here for a business conference who just have an hour or so for lunch between meetings,” he says. “They come in and go online while they’re having lunch and it works great for everybody, but that’s not the same as encouraging people to bring their laptops for dinner in the Gold Room for dinner.”
At Fox and Hound Smokehouse & Tavern near the Foothills Mall, you’re most likely to see a sea of laptops at breakfast and brunch, especially Sunday mornings, says manager Bob Templeton.
“We carry all the NFL football games in different areas of the restaurant, so we’ll have a lot of people in here watching the games while they’re online keeping track of how their fantasy football (team) is doing,” he says. “We’ve got a big dining room with plenty of tables, so we encourage them to come in with their laptops and enjoy themselves.”
Twenty miles southeast of the Fox and Hound, laptops are a common sight at what might seem an unlikely setting - a truck stop.
“We get a lot of truckers in here with their computers, checking their e-mails and doing other stuff,” says Omar Ramirez, manager at Omar’s Highway Chef Restaurant at the Triple T Truck Stop, 5451 E. Benson Highway. “A lot of trucking companies actually keep track of where their truckers are and communicate with them by computer, so it’s become part of what truckers do.”
